In January, Jefferson is granted money for expedition and appoints Lewis to lead the group. Lewis invites Clark to join him and they set up Camp Wood on banks of Mississippi River.
Expedition sets off on May 14th. Reaches Great Plains and almost immediately begins recording animals previously unseen.
Lewis and Clark hire Toussaint Charbonneau as interpreter.
First meet Sacagawea.
Sacagawea gives birth to baby boy. Helps lead expedition through familiar landmarks.
Mount Hood sighted, proof that at last they are nearing the ocean.
Expedition crosses the Continental Divide and reaches Pacific Ocean.
Leave for home in March and reach Yellowstone by July.
Lewis & Clark part company before rejoining to finish the expedition.
Reach St. Louis on September 23rd.
