Go camping early this year, avoid the heat and hassle of a dry year.

After a long week of the same routine you have been suffering through for 15 years, a spur of the moment get-away into the wild sounds a bit like a fresh-water stream in the middle of a desert. With the sweet smell of pine replacing the burning of exhaust and the trickle of streams instead of the humming of cars, a weekend camping trip will revitalize the spirits and give purpose to your life.

Into the Cookhouse and Out of the Doghouse - Last fall I purchased the Sport Grill prior to our Cub Scout pack's fall family camp out. Now my wife isn't exactly crazy about camping. But she was thrilled about the Dutch oven apple crisp I made for desert when we arrived that evening. And she loved the bacon, egg, and pancake breakfast I made the next morning using the non-stick griddles. This stored up good-will came in quite handy a little while later when we discovered that my wife's gear bag containing her clothes, contact lenses, and toiletries had fallen off the back of the truck en route. I cooked up a storm to avoid the wrath of another storm that weekend.

The Stove came in handy again over the winter when we lost power twice, once for two days. We did most of our cooking on the Sport Grill. Those two 30,000 BTU burners sure beat the daylights our of trying to cook for five on one of those little camp stoves.

P. Horgan received a free Camp Tool Kit for their submission.

Grilling Tips

  1. Food should be completely thawed before cooking.

  2. Marinating meat by soaking for several hours in refrigerator will break down the cellular structure. This tenderizes the meat and decreases cooking time. Marinating can also be done by injection because it allows you to cook meat immediately and is much more convenient.

  3. Use tongs or a spatula instead of a fork when turning meat. Some of natural juices will be lost if the meat is pierced.

  4. Use naturally lean meats, trim excess fat from steaks, and remove skin from poultry
