Month in the Middle
By Steve McGrath
March, a month in the middle, can be easily lost in the mix of deep powder days in Utah and looking forward to the summer Teton trip. Of course if you’re a mountaineer you’re thinking that I am crazy to say that March could be lost. After all, March is the month that the couloirs are no longer avalanche prone nor has all the snow completely melted. If you haven’t given mountaineering a try, why not try it this year? Call a local guide service and book and intro trip.
Another March outdoor opportunity is to hit the mountain streams for some fly fishing before they become raging muddy torrents. It may seem like a strange time to think about fly fishing but after you’ve spent all winter tying flies, its time to try out the new innovations. An even better reason to hit the rivers is that very few others are out there yet. It’s a way to enjoy a popular stream without having to battle the summer crowds.
I am sure that there are plenty of other outdoor activities available in March. The bottom line is that spring is a great time of year to enjoy the backcountry.
